October 09, 2021 – Winter Radio Preparedness

Net Control – N0KMO

N0KMO – We’ve been through an amazing summer. I got looking at my setup, and was testing and I realized my HF setup was a little on the weak side.

1) Need to build a couple more broadband antennas. Looking to build an 80M broadband antenna, also 20 and 10 meter. Looking to do that in the next could weeks/months.

2) Add another battery mainly for the radio side. Will end up covering batteries this year to keep them warm.

3) One thing I’ve gotten into 3D printing. Portable wire holder for mobile operations.

K0STR – I’m in a situation where I’m trying to get everything ready for winter and antenna problems. Generally doing maintenance and repair work, so I don’t have to do it when the snow starts flying.

N0KMO – That’s one thing I’m worried about is the snow. Looking at my daughter getting license updated. F250 is set up with radios. I want to make sure all the vehicles are ready for the winter, including radios. Deinitely checking batteries. Testing antennas and check coax connections.

The other thing I’m looking at is that I like to listen a lot, I got a scanner I put in place but my multi-use antenna isn’t work. A redundant internet connection in the house not only for mesh networking, but also in case other communication is needed. Battery backup for modem.

Double checking that backbone is working properly. Making sure all services on cell phone are up to date.
